2016-10-09: O Superman

I bet you thought you'd seen the last of our video series! Sure, there's been eight months of radio silence, interrupted only by one blip halfway through. Four months' wait is nothing to us -- our band is nearly 12 years old! We have songs that have been in progress longer than Presidential administrations! (Even longer than election campaigns!)

Tonight's venue, a distinguished and sophisticated room.

Anyway, here we are. By which I mean, here I am -- Daisy-Jones and Ludwika wouldn't fit in the hammock, so I believe they were "huh, huh"ing along while packing up their instruments at this point in the set. I don't know how many of the annual Horace Phair parties in Portland we've managed to play -- I like to think that we've at least hit as many as we've missed, but it's hard to prove as they're often not terribly well-documented in the interest of maintaining our ability to freely cross the US border.
It was Daisy-Jones Locher's first visit in capacity as a Creaking Plank to Portland, Oregon (or "Disneyland for grown-ups" as we like to call it) for our longstanding annual engagement at the Horace Phair party and it was a humdinger! Not only did we have RoJo(tm) the Therapy Llama as our opener, but this performance was just the second act to a will-our-set-happen-won't-it-happen (turns out, it would!) wedding the previous day up at the Kiwanis Camp on nearby Mount Hood. (And a Mazel Tov to Samantha & Chase!) But as much splendid amenity infrastructure as was present at the wedding (zip lines, board games, pizza and yurts), it lacked a hammock in the basement. Happily, the Saluthaus basement addressed that omission, and so our Portland experience managed to be a complete one! Will performing in a hammock become a thing that we revisit endlessly on-stage? I doubt it, but wouldn't that be nice! Supposing we can't perform in a hot tub (I can think of a few obstacles to making that happen) it's a nice compromise. (Nowhere to sling a hammock? How about beanbag chairs? Wait, could anything be less ergonomic?)
(And a big thanks to Josh for capturing (most of) the performance on his phone!)

2015-12: T-shirt deals for Toronto and Portland

So, did you avail yourself of a hot Creaking Planks octopus/accordion T-shirt? We sure went through a lot of them -- maybe the local market is now saturated, but maybe we'll take a gamble and get a new run printed for our 11th anniversary. But suppose you live away from Vancouver and never had a chance to pick up a shirt by attending one of our concerts? Well, a few of you availed yourselves of our online ordering and payment system... but in the shift over to the new website, that is no longer a straightforward process. Fear not, however, as for fans in a limited number of locations, there are forgotten and neglected stashes of shirts available to interested parties at fire sale prices!

Do you live in the biggest city in Canada? While the band's numerous members have mostly spent some time there, the band itself has never visited -- and yet, a trove of Creaking Planks T-shirts was brought there in a deprecated effort to make it easier for our fans in the Greater Toronto Area to have convenient access to them. Our impromptu warehouse, Dieter Friesen (of Deet Street productions, a longtime cornerstone of our reign at the Railway Club), is decamping to Prince Edward Island, and he is aiming to not bring all the shirts with him. So if you wear a Men's S, M or XL, or (like GTA-based cover model Nico, rocking the Planks shirt as hard as the bedhead) a Women's S, M, L or XL, then you're in luck! If you care to coordinate with Deet you can skip the shipping and go home with a Creaking Planks T-shirt today for only $10! (Steeper discounts may arise as we approach his departure date.) They make excellent Christmas presents, but will also suffice for Hannukah and Kwanzaa in a pinch! If the design is a winner but the sizes just aren't quite the right fit, you can always cut it out and turn it into a stylish patch!

We know we have friends in Toronto, but we also know that we have more friends in Portland, Oregon, where a small shipment of small shirts managed to make its way to this year's Horace Phair party without us. (It's... a long story.) Any Plank friends or octopus enthusiasts in the environs who wear a size S shirt, please make a connection with Jenn Dolan (or write us, we can facilitate the hookup) to get your sweet paws on a small shirt before the New Year, strictly by donation! (Apologies to The Big Smoke, that's just reflective of the regional economics of the matter.)

(And to the thwarted locals in Vancouver, Canada, fear not -- there are still a few on the racks over at Spartacus Books.)

New video: Sometimes All The People

We missed our chance at our anniversary show a couple of years ago, when Rod Matheson set up to record us playing "Music Music Music" and had the shot ruined by overenthusiastic dancers enjoying themselves at the cost of posterity. But we had a standing arrangement to set up another video shoot of a live music performance in an unconventional situation, and after only two and a half years, we managed to make good on it! Finally, a good YouTube clip (we already have a popular one, now we need a good one) of our band looking and sounding more like it does today, a complete take of a song we actually know how to play, more or less.

Also, a bit of catchup: congratulations to Loren & Marisol whose wedding reception at 5 International we performed at in late April; hats off to the folks at the 6th annual Stainsbury Block Party we entertained Sept 7th while a real fire truck dazzled all, and greetings to all our old friends in Portland we partied with this Columbus Day weekend as well as the new ones from the Low Tide Drifters and Girls' Rock Camp we made in Eugene at Plank Town! (And thanks to Rachael & Ben for setting us up there, again!)
Did you know we have a Google+
page?

2012-08, 09, 10 missed business.

Because sometimes they only come through at the last minute, and sometimes they are private functions, and sometimes it is more work to talk about the gigs than to play them, a handful of shows eked out lately that we never mentioned here on our blog, an omission we intend to now correct:

August 22nd, as suggested, we returned to the Trout Lake Community Centre for another delightful outdoor evening concert, courtesy of the Myrtle Family Band who invited us to open. Repeat customers were veritably outraged with delight. One precocious tot wanted us to make impromptu musical arrangements of all of their favorite nursery rhymes -- perhaps a project for another time. Only one on this occasion.

September 8th we bravely traversed the Great Ice Wall in order to take up an invitation to perform at the Sh'Bang festival, located in the beautiful Lookout Arts Quarry south of Bellingham.

September 12th we descended into Calabash's caged basement between drag lip sync acts to enjoy a slice of cake and blitz through a blisteringly short set (prior to an Accordion Noir Festival visit from our visiting Bay Area pal Renee de la Prade on the radio) at the Catalogue of Independent Arts' launch party for this season's installment of their "See Seven" catalogue of arts events -- for which we were paid in the following swell ad in their pages:

(Now all we need is some more recent gushing copy for our press kit!)

Then we performed Sept 19th at the Stanley Park Rowing Club, an organization counting among its honorary membership British royals who write in with letters of congratulations when their rugby clubs reach a century of age. There we played in support of one of the few Vancouver political organizations with which we could share a room without having to hold our noses: the end-of-summer BBQ of municipal party COPE. Despite preparing a set of old folk songs for, well, old folks, we ended up jamming instrumentals during supper (Fred Bass wanted to know: is that what is called klezmer?) and then, after Ben West spoke at length on many weighty matters, ripping through our power set for the youth slate. (Then getting lost in Stanley Park, then giving Norway's accordion siren Guro von Germeten a ride back to Geoff Berner's place from her Accordion Noir radio appearance!)

Finally, despite rodents and humans coming together to coordinate elaborate preparations, we did not manage to field a physical presence last night, October 6th, at the eleventh annual Horace Phair party in Portland over Columbus Day (Wyoming Johnny did, but it takes at least two to be a "we". Blackbox's excuse is his accordion's tapeworm.) Nonetheless, hearkening way back to the ridiculous technological underpinnings of our initial association with our jolly chums there, we managed to set up a videoconference through Google+ Hangouts (Skype wouldn't return a picture from our end!) and after some awkward small talk played a set as an international duet over broadband, Johnny live in a Portland Saluthaus living room with a banjo and Blackbox in HIS Vancouver living room on accordion and banjo-ukulele, with guest Plank appearances for the first time from his pets Jim Casy the cat and Pickles the dog. Songs We Never Play Anymore came out for fans from way back, and were sung along to with minimal latency, making for the second most memorable tele-presence at this year's party. If you can't be there, this was a distant consolation prize, but a virtual party is better than a kick in the pants. We will drown our sorrows in turkey.

Did You Know that the Creaking Planks have a fan page on Google+? Strange but true.

2011-10-10: HPX

One further omission: typically the Creaking Planks send a serious (well, as serious as we get) posse to Portland over Canadian Thanksgiving / American Columbus Day for the annual Horace Phair house party, to fill its basement with a raucous ruckus. This year, despite much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments, all we could manage to field was our fiddler, Wyoming Johnny. Still, he came equipped with his axe and a copy of favorite Planks singalongs, so "we" could still represent on some level.

creakingplanks Rumour (and, well, @mwkelley) has it "7 drunks + 1 banjo + 1 trombone" could not replace us. But were they too drunk, or not enough?

mwkelley @UnwashedMass It occurs to me that our caterwauling of the Planks songbook last night may've amounted to actual character defamation.

Anyhow, naught to commemorate our absence with, but we can re-share our Planks live bootleg mix for @horacephair '08
At least he cut a sharp figure! The camera never lies: that set was one for the ages.
