2014-03-28: with My Dearest Friends, Jimy Now and The Milk Pipes at the Railway Club

After our anniversary extravaganza at the Railway, it was a surprise to get the phone call out of the blue from IMU Productions, whose shows you have assuredly seen postered all over the place. Their idea was to have a jug band support the ukulele-filled Milk Pipes, again at the Railway, and, by gum, they sure have found one. We aim to demonstrate to them that we really go for the jugular! The show will start at 9:30 pm, and the cover is $10. This is slated to be our only other public gig this winter, so bring your groundhog along and you can take turns checking each others' shadows. 2014-01-19: the Creaking Planks' fabulous 9th anniversary concert

We did in fact make it to Horace Phair in Portland in October. And though we took November off, we managed to play a swell holiday concert to the Compassion Club in December. Now it is a new year and a chance for our first gig of the year -- which happens to be our annual band birthday party at the Railway Club!

Nine years is a long time to keep on keeping on, but in recent years the Creaking Planks, East Van's jug band of the damned, have made a tradition of throwing themselves an annual anniversary show at Vancouver's ‘grande dame’ of venues, the Railway Club. Unwilling to allow themselves to be ground to a halt by the ravages of greying hair, sleepless toddlers, grad school and graveyard shift work, they aim to demonstrate that rock 'n roll remains the most prematurely ageing influence of all. With their unruly assortment of underdog old-country instruments, they breathe a new rootsy life into monster pop anthems which have long since collapsed beneath their own sodden hubris and, despite being old enough to know better, compel the moldering leg-bones of also-ran B-side songs that history has unjustly forgotten to jiggle and caper like they are callow and spry again -- some old trick involving a spike of shaved ginger root. Remember when you were young and foolish? You will.

Glittering Kingdom grooves, taps and twinkles through tunes that meander from lonely circus swing to prohibition-era jazz, folk noir to post-apocalyptic acoustic. The sparkly foursome (Katheryn Petersen, Lindy Gray, Jen Rashleigh and Belinda Bruce) braid fine harmonies amidst guitar, accordion, saw, harmonica, snare and tinkly percussion. Glittering Kingdom is jazzed to debut the video of their bittersweet cover of Leonard Cohen's "The Future" at the Railway.

Vancouver's Sidewalk Cellist takes the classics out of the concert hall and throws them into the streets, with the help of her nearly-indestructible carbon-fiber cello! She provides a musical mix of everything from Bach to Nirvana, jazz to heavy metal, and more, building bridges between genres for audiences of all shapes and sizes.

For eight years now the jug band of the damned has been celebrated for its consummate deception, pulling out old-timey instruments and using them to improve on the most indispensibly disposable tunes of the 20th century. Steady on, lads! The Creaking Planks bring the sour mash to the mash-up at the down-home hoe-down. Now say that three times fast!

Two fellow acts join us on this august occasion:

Fire-Man puts the wind in the wood, and the fire in that wind. Sculpting an orchestra of demented Dr. Seuss horns wasn't enough for him; he had to also reproduce -- and then exceed! -- the sound of what that looks like. Thus, the Legion of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra.

The members of the Myrtle Family Band are bound by a tie thicker than blood. Those mysterious Myrtle Sisters boil down a thick, juicy slice of Americana to a potent syrup both sweet and salty, then apply it judiciously.

2012-09-27: Oktoberfest at the Railway with The End Tree, The Creaking Planks, and Fang!

It's that special time of the year when our Kishka Anthem makes sense! (from a sausage point of view at least).

The Planks will be celebrating Oktoberfest in not quite Oktober at the Railway Club this coming Thursday, September 27 with chamber squawk trio The End Tree, and well-heeled accordion rock weirdos Fang.

2012-01-18: Creaking Planks' 7th anniversary with Raghu Lokanathan & Ana Bon-Bon!

And just like that, it's that time again: another year, another anniversary show. It almost feels like we're still recovering from last year's! But some things, sufficiently repeated, grow into custom -- almost tradition. We've still got a crack squad of sharp acoustic players with demented musical tastes, and again we've managed to bolster them with opening sets from some of our favourite acts: in this case, Prince George's philosopher-king of the singer-songwriters, Raghu Lokanathan, as well as Vancouver's accordion-queen-in-absentia, Ana Bon-Bon taking a rare tour of the colonies from her new seat in London, England! And as with last year, this year we also congregate to celebrate with this show at the Railway Club, upstairs at 579 Dunsmuir Street. The show should be rolling by 8:30 pm, and again, admission is $8, or $6 for Railway Club members.

We're learning some new songs (at least one of which is not only new to us but to the world!) and exhuming other lost and forgotten works from the great 20th century popular songbook... and of course polishing up the favorite of the discriminating Heineken fan, Jaan Pehechaan Ho. It should be a great time (the only thing going downtown on a Wednesday night!) that we won't see the likes of until, well, January 2013, so we hope to catch you out Wednesday, January 18th, 2012!

2011-11-30: Planks at Memewar comedy night!

Has it really been almost a year since Memewar magazine invited us back to the Railway Club stage? Well, we're on our way once again to their comedy night Wednesday, November 30th, starting around 9 pm, with Memewar stalwart Aubyn Rader sitting in again on drums. (Plank codename pending!) Jen Miller will be playing Very Serious music, and improv troupe The Fictionals will be trying to spin comedy cold from the audience's straw. We will try our level best to be comical, but... well, you saw the joke in that last blog post. Normalize? Chuckanut Drive? Maybe we can play instrumentals and double the humour content...

NB -- our next appearance at the Railway, Wed Jan 18th, will be our 7th anniversary party with Raghu Lokanathan and Ana Bon-Bon!

2011-06-14: Planks open for Winnipeg's F-Holes

Our good times have been scattered as of late, few and far between but all big, fun times (as in, occasions of large enjoyment.) Some of them have been in unorthodox formats (and for us, that's saying something), and others have just crept up on us while we were consumed with other details (ask Airbeard about his musical Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, for instance!)

Case in point, we had a lot of fun at the Gastown Tattoo Parlour's grand opening Sat, May 28 -- one of the very, very few kinds of rooms we'd never played before. But you never found out about it until now. Well, do go check them out -- even when they don't host damnable jug bands, their ink is something quite special.

We're not going to let tonight quite squeak on by -- at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir, upstairs) from likely 9 on we'll be opening for another of our new Manitoban friends, Winnipeg's wholly decently-named F-Holes, delivering a heady mix of gypsy jazz, zippy dixieland, and viper blues. We've never played a gig east of BC, but at this rate we'll never need to -- they keep on coming to us!

2011-03-03: Planks open for Oh My Darling

Please pardon the small bout of time travel -- this gig pre-dates (by one day) the most recent one we've posted, and there should be another, still earlier one yet coming! A busy week ahead for our intrepid Planks!

In the best Christmas present ever, Blackbox Squeezebeard awoke to a phone call for... "Blackbox Squeezebeard?", an extraordinary wake-up call informed by the contact info on our press kit page. We have friends in Winnipeg, a good place to have friends, but it wasn't them who put in a good word for us to our NEW friends in Winnipeg's country-folk bluegrassy quartet Oh My Darling. (The bird in their ear was someone at the Biltmore -- also a good place to have friends -- but ah, I digress!)

To make a long story short(er), Thurs March 3rd we'll continue our spree of appearing at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street) at more-or-less monthly-by-chance intervals opening for these wonderful winter birds, touring in promotion of their album "Love Shack" -- a good place to keep warm and cozy when the drifts get too high on those long, cold prairie winters. Show at 9, $10 at the door! (and save a couple of coins for some of the new Creaking Planks buttons, this season's outrageous new fashion accessory!

2011-01-31: Creaking Planks 6th anniversary

Sunday January 30th, 2005, in the auditorium at the Western Front, a room which has seen so many deliberately stranger things, an accordionist with a performance poetry troupe met an outsider acoustic noise duo with slightly more underground musical sensibilities than the Shaggs had, and knew that their two great tastes must go great together. Enter: the Creaking Planks. Six years later, we skip lightly past the endless living rooms, back yards, and festivals, Vancouver's introduction to the ZombieWalk, a pirate flashmob, two stage musicals, gigs down the US Pacific seaboard (studded with the abandoned hulks of derelict tour vehicles), and memorable mixed bills -- following '50s squeezebox sex symbol Dick Contino at the 20th annual Cotati Accordion Festival, and opening in turn for free software guru Richard Stallman... our two biggest gigs!

Now we actually know how to play our instruments, and our musical sensibilities have matured from "Can we play this?" to "Should we play this?" In honour of our six years we're putting to bed many of the songs we've kept close this whole time, and celebrating onetime contributors whose paths led them through the rotating roster of Planks before settling for other, less strange projects. We may not match our record of 11 Planks on-stage simultaneously, but we should be able to at least cumulatively meet that high-water mark over the course of the night. Joining us will be musical guiding lights Petunia the yodeling cowboy and Al Mader, the Minimalist Jug Band, whose "I'm a Lousy Lay" were the magic words that got us together in the first place.

It's also a retirement for Dieter Friesen's tenure booking his Deet Street nights at the Railway Club, a long association between him and us dating back to our first appearance there in April '06 sharing a bill with his band Rick Danko's Ghost under the auspices of Tamara Nile. In short, we have numerous reasons to be celebrating this night, of things changing more the more they stay the same.

Update! Allan reviewed it, in a roundabout fashion, and an American friend came up from Bellingham to enjoy some great music and take a bunch of pictures capturing the night's wild and woolly energy!

2011-01-01: Pleasing Squeezing revisited, with Ingrid Gatin and Fang!

Proving that some of their squeezy bills of 2010 were impossible to top, CFRO's Accordion Noir is proud to present a repeat bill from a show they and us hosted in May, this time at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street) with the sing-along sensation Fang and Winnipeg's squeezing siren Ingrid Gatin. Start the year off on a high note and see if we can top it in 2011!

All that plus at midnight we turn over the Railway's stage to Gold Stars Are For Suckers, who have nothing to do with great accordion music but can still give up a good time. $10 / $8 for Railway members.

2010-12-19: Creaking Planks at Memewar launch

The jug band of the damned shows its meagre warm and cuddly festive side as we help to celebrate the launch of the 12th issue of Memewar Magazine. We're on from 9:30-10:30 pm at the Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir Street at Seymour (upstairs).

2010-05-31: Planks get good press, play Deet Street birthday party

The morning of the Cabaret of Wonders! we awoke to strange and marvelous news: the recording which we had debuted last June had garnered a positive review in Vancouver's free weekly arts paper of record, the Georgia Straight!

Attendees of early Creaking Planks shows—say, at the first Vancouver Zombiewalk after-party, where Rowan "Blackbox Squeezebeard" Lipkovits (accordion) and Lee Shoal (ukulele, kazoo) did somewhat halting covers of songs like the Kingston Trio’s "Zombie Jamboree" — could be forgiven for thinking the band a joke. A funny joke, and certainly an in-joke, but not a group you might turn to for the pleasures of polished musicianship, even of the jug-band variety. Well, here’s a surprise: as if to illustrate the truth of the saying that a fool who persists in his folly shall become wise, the Planks have benefited from playing innumerable shows locally and throughout the Pacific Northwest. While still richly swathed in irony, the traditionals on this CD (European and/or Yiddish folkie fare like "Tanz Tanz Yidelekh" and "Moscow Nights" and the absurdly deadpan covers—including a new recording of Lipkovits's delightful arrangement of the Minimalist Jug Band's "Dead Man's Pants"—are, in fact, quite beautifully conceived and credibly played.

That night, at the gobsmacking Cabaret of Wonders!, we sold our last two remaining copies of the suddenly-in-demand disc. Perhaps a reprinting will be in order -- though we may have seen the last of the limited-edition stylish metal containers.

But enough resting on our laurels! Moving on from past glories, an increasingly rump Planks (blasted summer travels -- and I'm up next!) will be wigglin' and groovin' tonight at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street) from 9:15 on with our Deet Street friends, including the slam poetry of Lara, the "folk/rock/blues stylings of the Dennis Pimm Jamtacular Experience", and our favorite -- a puppet show entitled "The Tragic Tale of Pierrot" presented by Carnival Sized Cinnamon Hearts. $7/5 for Railway members!

2009-11-05: Memewar issue launch at the Railway Club

Celebrating the 10th issue of Memewar Magazine (on the theme of "Adaptation") at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir) with the Planks at midnight and other musical acts Wintermitts and MT-40 as well as readings from Neil Rayner and Maria Lénàrt -- and the thrilling conclusion to Thor Polukoshko’s multimedia post-modern advertising genre mash-up Cereal Junkies!

2009-10-26: a Deet Street Hallowe'en party at the Railway Club

It’s that spooky time of year again and in the run up to All Hallow’s Eve, the Deet Street is getting psyched to bring a couple sets from some Railway veterans to get you movin’ your ghostly feet. The Creaking Planks, Vancouver’s own pirate jug band of the damned is back to bring you a musical experience unlike anything you’ve ever heard, the perfect accompaniment to your haunted pre-hallow’s Monday evening.

But before their spooky set, be sure to check out Gadjo’s Django Reinhardt-inspired gypsy swing; jazzy virtuosic mellowness at its best.

But wait, there’s more: be sure to get there early so you don’t miss a very special set from Al Mader, The Minimalist Jug Band. Al’s inimitable brand of beatnik punkabilly is something you won’t find anywhere on this earth.

Furthermore, being as we’re approaching Halloween, the Deet Street invites all of you to dress up as your favourite dead (ie: Michael Jackson, but he’s still merchandising his ass off), almost dead (ie: Amy Winehouse, poor girl needs to chill out) or should be dead (ie: Keith Richards, PS: WTF how the hell is he still going) musician. As always the beers will be cold, the music rocking, the company excellent and the times great. It’s the spookiest Monday night this side of a Scooby Doo Halloween Special.

Even if we were on too late for the photographer to catch us, Lauren Eldridge of Backstage Vancouver soundly enjoyed this show, and wasn't afraid to tell everyone -- on its blog and on its Twitter feed! She came back for more the next night and got a very different beast at Blackstrap Sadie's 8)

2009-06-13: Planks play another wedding and the Railway again!

Juggling two offers we couldn't refuse, the Creaking Planks plan for a scorching Saturday night whipping down from playing at Phil + Kimla's wedding up at SFU to open the second anniversary of JEff Younger's night (third Tuesday of every month!) at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street, upstairs)! and he's programmed some of his favorite acts from the series to join him on the stage there that night.

Here's the lineup: in addition to having the jug band of the damned back for the opening slot at 10:30 pm, you get a wild and wacky set of unshorn spoken word from RC Weslowski, a set from Joseph Blood and the Blue Tick Houn' Dogs, JEff Younger's own inbred redneck orchestra The Family Stump, the WhiskeyDicks (who "blast their way through traditional tunes and modern hits with the spirit of the mad and the thirst of a sailor who just got kicked out of his metal band") and finally (late into the night) Very Good, the band which won't have too difficult a time surpassing their name.

Doors at 8:30, admission is $10, $8 for Railway Club members.

2009-02-19: Memewar Launch "Gods and Idols" issue at the Railway Club

We had so much fun with the crew of Memewar magazine at their last release party that they invited us back.Here's it's poster:

As you can see, once again it's at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street at Seymour, upstairs), and we're being joined by readings from the magazine (and its "Gods and Idols" theme) from C.J. Leon, Rhoda Hodjati and Tony Power and music from Wintermitts and Victoria's Ballgag 'n Chain Gang... and something involving the Vancouver Cantata Singers.  Admission gets you a copy of the magazine (it's a great business model -- each party's cover pays for the subsequent issue, whose release party pays for the subsequent issue... and so forth).

Next up we've got a private engagement on the 27th (then see how fast we can peel off to catch Geoff Berner's CD launch at the Biltmore!), but stay tuned for another Planky evening at Cafe Montmartre Saturday February 28th!

2008-11-24: with the Lawn Dogs at the Railway Club

As part of a noble (if irrelevant) lineage of shows going back to the spring's SeaBus pirate party and further yet to an appearance at the Railway in April of 2006 that Tamara Nile set up for us, the Creaking Planks (need I remind you: THE JUG BAND OF THE DAMNED!) are once again descending upon the stage of the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street) like a plague of, I don't know, sizzling bacon bits hurtling hatefully from the angry sky.  We've been paired this time around with The Lawn Dogs, a band billed as the best-dressed bluegrass band on Bowen Island... at our most elegant and dandified, conversely, we wear basic BC:Clette black and red with costume facial hair in places and styles it should never, ever, be growing.  These baying hounds should be taking the early set ~9:30-10:30, leaving us to close the night in our fourth Railway appearance in as many months.  As Mike Zinger of Whiskey Jar would be inclined to exclaim... "Not bad!"

2008-10-09: Planks at Memewar Issue #7 launch at the Railway Club!

The Planks are buffing their splinters for a filthy, filthy return to the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street at Seymour, upstairs) for the third time in two month (and the second time this week! a big change of pace from the nearly two-years' gap prior!)  Hopefully things will be almost-but-not-quite as off-the-hook as last week's show, at which we took the stage of the sold-out Railway Club an hour late (Geoff Berner was well in his element -- some kind of formaldehyde, I think -- and on top of his game can halt a 10-piece band in its tracks with a well-timed anecdote!) well after 1 am.  An hour later they didn't want to let us leave the stage, though we'd exhausted the set.  Roar! Finally, the crowds were beaten back by urging them to become members of Co-op radio and to revisit us six mere days later... at this occasion!

This time we're all playing our hearts out to celebrate the launch of issue #7 of Memewar Magazine, with its focus on censorship (The Song Of The Count: censored!) and obscenity.  (And really, what could be more obscene than a nerd on a squeezebox plaintively crooning songs about explicit matters of sexuality?) Also in the upcoming issue you may find an advertisement for our upcoming album release! (No, this isn’t it.) Other performances will include the Girls on Top burlesque troop (there are two words that don't go together well!), an erotic poetry slam courtesy of R.C. Weslowski, C.J. Leon, Fernando Raguero and Jane "Break Your Freak" Panek with accompaniment from her companion (hm, or not!)  There will be guest readings from the issue, possibly recited by acclaimed pottymouths Elaine Miller and Nathaniel Wolfe, and more musical performances from Bells Clanging and the Barcelona Chair, who will be surrounding our 11:15-starting set like a splinter sandwich.The show starts at 8:30 pm (your $10 admission gets you a complementary copy of the magazine!) and further boasts "more Cereal Junkies" (?!) and naughty prizes!

(And then we're off to HPVII!)

2008-10-03: the Creaking Planks close the 1st annual Accordion Noir festival of Squeeze!

With all September's transitions, we've been a bit out of sorts recently, as a result of which some of our recent performances have slipped past without being commemorated here, including a three day spree -- this year's community circus at the Four Sisters Co-Op (Sat Sept 13th), the start of a new GoGo season at Hoko's with Francis Mantis and the Sun Aristocrats  (Sun Sept 14th), and a monthly cultural night at the Cedar Cottage Community Garden (Mon Sept 15th)... plus another great evening at Trees Fri Sept 5th at which some of our number sat in with Erin Graves! ( -- an impromptu backup stint that can be witnessed through Youtube videos.)

But that's not what this post is about!  Not catching up, but boldly bounding forward, like a hell-bent golden retriever hurtling lemming-like off a cliff in pursuit of a glowing tennis ball.  (But not quite as, y'know, ominous.)  Squeezebeard Blackbox's weekly side project Accordion Noir, the world's only all-accordion radio show / podcast, is putting on the first annual Accordion Noir Festival of Squeeze... mainstage performances from 9 pm on at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir at Seymour, upstairs) Friday, October 3rd! Admission should be in the vicinity of $10, a bit less for Railway Club members.  The Planks will be giddily closing the night sometime after midnight!  (And please, dismiss those nepotistic thoughts from your head -- we were hand-picked by festival headliner Geoff Berner, the man who first inspired Squeezebeard to pick up his blackbox, along with Amy Denio from Seattle and Natasha Enquist from Victoria, making this a Pacific Northwest summit of sorts.)

Squeezebeard feels it would be remiss were we not to mention, as does the poster, that the Railway show is actually only the second day of the festival, which opens 7 pm the previous night Thursday Sept 2nd at Spartacus Books' new location (684 E. Hastings at Heatley and no, it doesn't just sound familiar -- I knew we'd find a way to play at that site again!  It's Gabe's old Gaff Gallery!) and will include not only hot live performances by real squeezeboxers (and not just him! as is so often the case at the monthly squeezebox circle regularly held at that place and time) but Bruce's pet project the accordion fashion show and a 9 pm screening of the Accordion Tribe movie. 2008-08-19: Planks at the Railway Club!

All aboard!  It's been a while since we played at this stately Vancouver venue (not since a strange set of Christmas tunes December 10th, 2006)... and it seems the recollection of our last visit has worn off, since we've been invited back by Jeff Younger to play a closing set (starting ~11:30 pm) following performances by Hilary Grist and a scaled-down version of his psychedelic country outfit the Family Stump.  Simply everyone who isn't at Radiohead will be there (local music historians note: Radiohead themselves played the Railway in 1995!)
