Staggering out of their first decade looking markedly changed, East Van's jug band of the damned take to the stage to do their unique combination of holy idiocy, colliding the canny with the foolish, the sacred with the profane, and Britney Spears with the accordion. Doors at 8:30, $10.Join us, won't you?The Benedict Arnolds of the trad set, The Creaking Planks squander perfectly pleasant old-timey acoustic instruments on unlikely repertoire that ranges from inappropriately avant-garde to downright bizarre. But why? It’s anyone’s guess, but happily as it turns out, the unexpected end result is pretty fun: a mystery wrapped in an accordion wrapped in an enigma wrapped in bacon.
The members of the Myrtle Family Band are bound by a tie thicker than blood. Those mysterious Myrtle Sisters boil down a thick, juicy slice of Americana to a potent syrup both sweet and salty, then apply it judiciously.
Vancouver’s Sidewalk Cellist takes the classics out of the concert hall and throws them into the streets, with the help of her nearly-indestructible carbon-fiber cello! She provides a musical mix of everything from Bach to Nirvana, jazz to heavy metal, and more, building bridges between genres for audiences of all shapes and sizes.

2016-01-29: Planks' 11th Anniversary party with the Sidewalk Cellist & the Myrtle Family Band
Thursday, November 26, 2015
2015-04-17: CFRO Co-Op Radio’s 40th Birthday party at the WISE Hall!
The party goes down at the WISE Hall (1882 Adanac Street at Victoria), also features a set by Purple Soul (and a variety show segment featuring, well, a cast of thousands: tag cloud -- "Adam Farnsworth, anniversary, CFRO, Chelsea Rooney, Chris Suen, Homegoing Brass Band, Jillian Christmas, Kenan Sungur, Mama Rude Gal, Mike Zinger, Purple Soul, R.C. Weslowski, Ramon Flores Trovador, Roots Roundup, Royal Aloha Monday Orchestra, Steve Bowell, Suzette Amaya, WISE Hall"), and begins with a mixer at 7 pm -- performances at 8:30. (Do you think there will be a DJ? There will probably be 50 of them!)
Advance tickets for station members are $10, available at Highlife, Red Cat Records, at The Wise Hall & Lounge, online, and of course at the radio station. (Prices will increase a little at the door, and a little more for non-members.)
If you need more convincing, here's an official PSA made by the station in which we are described as a "dorkestra". (This is why you generally try to provide your own promotional copy.) Just make sure they spell our name right!
2015-01-16: the Creaking Planks’ 10th anniversary extravaganza!
Now we are ten. We have been a going concern for over three times as long as that naive band of three, excited to be invited to play on the radio and basically trying to trick people into giving us opportunities to play for free as many nights a week as possible. We've played individual gigs whose fees have netted us as much dosh as entire years of playing for exposure got us; we have flown on airplanes to perform at festivals in other countries we never even applied to appear at. We have gone into studios to make recordings and then forgot about them. The level of success we have achieved has exceeded any heights we might ever have reasonably expected to reach with our improbable format, and yet, not a single one of our dozen-odd members is able to make a living in Vancouver making music. It's a funny, contradictory existence, to be true.
Whatever other beats we have and haven't been able to hit (gonged off stage: check; provided soundtrack for a live sex show: check; played on the soundtrack to the video game World of Goo: almost, but didn't quite happen), one constant for the last several years has been that we've had at least one show annually where we get to have it our way, on our terms -- to play on a bill stacked with acts we will enjoy, getting to pick our set times to accommodate our numerous twisted schedules. To wit: our anniversary show. Members turn up out of the woodwork to play just this one show all year round. We expect to be playing with 4 Planks and end up performing with 11, thereby kiboshing any chance of performing any material picked up since the previous anniversary show! We know that whatever we earn will end up as bus fare when split a dozen ways, so we ensure that we are paid amply in the only other currency with any weight to the unruly band of loose cannon musicians: fun.
For the first few years we were too scattered in our neurotic attempts to give away all the music as often as possible to worry about occasions on which to have shows that were guaranteed to be good, and for the first five years, that 3rd anniversary was the only one we celebrated. (It gave all anniversary celebrations overall somewhat of a bad aftertaste in our collective mouths, but eventually we learned to love again.) For the second five years, it has been mandatory: we had great, fun shows for our sixth anniversary, our seventh, our eighth, ninth and now, coming up next... the tenth anniversary of our first gig... to be our greatest, most fun anniversary show yet?
And now, apropos of nothing, I'd like to casually drop in a random photograph that assuredly has nothing to do with anything I'm talking about:
Here are the vital details you will need to know:

...
Greetings to the Plank Nation! The time is nigh upon us! Tomorrow night, Friday, January 15th, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our first meeting at the inaugural performance of the Creaking Planks at the Western Front's "raw and cooked" showcase curated by Sarah Macdougall, along with Chrystalene Buhler, Joanna Chapman-Smith, and the freak performance poetry revue "That's My Brain... And You're KILLING It!" There the Planking of Ole and Heather -- "a droney song, a noisy song, a short improv; all with a touch of pirate" -- met Rowan's arrangement of Al Mader's "I'm A Lousy Lay" ... and the rest was, if not exactly history, ten years of occasionally-inspired obscurity. We celebrated the decade-long musical experiment on the Accordion Noir radio program last night, featuring a series of rare recordings and concert bootlegs from various nadirs and zeniths of our varied history, and you can enjoy them as well... by following that link. We'll be breaking into the vault of time and playing a few similar selections from our vast back catalogue Friday night. So, you know that it's all going down at the Emerald, right? 555 Gore, upstairs at the site of the old dim sum restaurant the New Diamond? Here, perhaps the poster that Ehren Salazar designed will help to cement the details in your memory:
That's right: not just the Creaking Planks, but also their Jewish wedding band klezmorim alter egos Der Royshiker Krokves opening! The prime mover Al Mader, the Minimalist Jug Band! New tunes from Victoria's newly electrified improvised genius, Ehren Salazar! Plus a set of magical tricks from Travis, gosh wow! Ten dollars (for ten years) -- two dollars per act -- is basically a criminally undercharged rate, and audience members will be getting away with, well, a very good deal. Speaking of good deals... do you like accordions? Of course you do! Do you like octopuses? Duh! Why not both at the same time! "You got your octopus in my accordion!" "You got your accordion in my octopus!" "Heey...." "...NOT BAD!" But wait, this is a pointless digression! That's more like it. That's right, ladies and gentlemen, for the low, low price of another ten dollars, you could go home wearing this -- the first in what will assuredly be a long, long line of Creaking Planks fashions. This t-shirt is from the fabulous 7th anniversary poster design by Daisy Jones-Locher. No longer need you wear the tattered poster! Spare yourself the paper cuts! But that's not all... for further whimsical and otherwise-unavailable goods that will be sold at our concert, read on! That's right, it's the 2015 edition of Renee de la Prade's long-running Accordion Babes cheesecake pin-up calendar/album. We're not represented therein, as the "Accordion Dudes" beefcake calendar has had a long and bumpy trip getting off the ground, but we are great friends with the Babes and run on similar wavelengths as their strange sensibilities. Each month's babe is represented by a track on the accompanying CD album, so you can buy it to listen to and then later on you can pull out the magnifying glass to better examine which make and model of squeezebox each babe is rocking. A handful of these will be for sale for $20 a piece, and we can guarantee you won't find them in any store in town. Only in the strange chaos bubble surrounding the Planks do these bizarre alternate worlds manifest. See you there!Friday, January 10, 2014
2014-01-19: the Creaking Planks' fabulous 9th anniversary concert
doors at 7:30PM, show at 9:30PM (sharp...really!)
at the Railway Club, 579 Dunsmuir Street (upstairs), Vancouver, BC
$9 at the door
Featuring The Creaking Planks, Glittering Kingdom, and Sidewalk Cellist.
>
Nine years is a long time to keep on keeping on, but in recent years the Creaking Planks, East Van's jug band of the damned, have made a tradition of throwing themselves an annual anniversary show at Vancouver's ‘grande dame’ of venues, the Railway Club. Unwilling to allow themselves to be ground to a halt by the ravages of greying hair, sleepless toddlers, grad school and graveyard shift work, they aim to demonstrate that rock 'n roll remains the most prematurely ageing influence of all. With their unruly assortment of underdog old-country instruments, they breathe a new rootsy life into monster pop anthems which have long since collapsed beneath their own sodden hubris and, despite being old enough to know better, compel the moldering leg-bones of also-ran B-side songs that history has unjustly forgotten to jiggle and caper like they are callow and spry again -- some old trick involving a spike of shaved ginger root. Remember when you were young and foolish? You will.
Glittering Kingdom grooves, taps and twinkles through tunes that meander from lonely circus swing to prohibition-era jazz, folk noir to post-apocalyptic acoustic. The sparkly foursome (Katheryn Petersen, Lindy Gray, Jen Rashleigh and Belinda Bruce) braid fine harmonies amidst guitar, accordion, saw, harmonica, snare and tinkly percussion. Glittering Kingdom is jazzed to debut the video of their bittersweet cover of Leonard Cohen's "The Future" at the Railway.
Vancouver's Sidewalk Cellist takes the classics out of the concert hall and throws them into the streets, with the help of her nearly-indestructible carbon-fiber cello! She provides a musical mix of everything from Bach to Nirvana, jazz to heavy metal, and more, building bridges between genres for audiences of all shapes and sizes.

2013-01-24: Creaking Planks 8th anniversary show at the Railway!
Thursday January 24 2013
The Creaking Planks' 8th anniversary extravaganza with guests The Myrtle Family Band and The Legion Of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra
Doors at 8:30 pm. Cover: $8
For eight years now the jug band of the damned has been celebrated for its consummate deception, pulling out old-timey instruments and using them to improve on the most indispensibly disposable tunes of the 20th century. Steady on, lads! The Creaking Planks bring the sour mash to the mash-up at the down-home hoe-down. Now say that three times fast!
Two fellow acts join us on this august occasion:
Fire-Man puts the wind in the wood, and the fire in that wind. Sculpting an orchestra of demented Dr. Seuss horns wasn't enough for him; he had to also reproduce -- and then exceed! -- the sound of what that looks like. Thus, the Legion of Flying Monkeys Horn Orchestra.
The members of the Myrtle Family Band are bound by a tie thicker than blood. Those mysterious Myrtle Sisters boil down a thick, juicy slice of Americana to a potent syrup both sweet and salty, then apply it judiciously.

2012-01-18: Creaking Planks' 7th anniversary with Raghu Lokanathan & Ana Bon-Bon!
And just like that, it's that time again: another year, another anniversary show. It almost feels like we're still recovering from last year's! But some things, sufficiently repeated, grow into custom -- almost tradition. We've still got a crack squad of sharp acoustic players with demented musical tastes, and again we've managed to bolster them with opening sets from some of our favourite acts: in this case, Prince George's philosopher-king of the singer-songwriters, Raghu Lokanathan, as well as Vancouver's accordion-queen-in-absentia, Ana Bon-Bon taking a rare tour of the colonies from her new seat in London, England! And as with last year, this year we also congregate to celebrate with this show at the Railway Club, upstairs at 579 Dunsmuir Street. The show should be rolling by 8:30 pm, and again, admission is $8, or $6 for Railway Club members.
We're learning some new songs (at least one of which is not only new to us but to the world!) and exhuming other lost and forgotten works from the great 20th century popular songbook... and of course polishing up the favorite of the discriminating Heineken fan, Jaan Pehechaan Ho. It should be a great time (the only thing going downtown on a Wednesday night!) that we won't see the likes of until, well, January 2013, so we hope to catch you out Wednesday, January 18th, 2012!
Many thanks to Daisy-Jones Locher for the amazing poster artwork; you should be seeing it on some of a new run of buttons, and who knows what other goodies we're going to come up with for the merch table of the damned?
This performance is a presentation of CFRO 102.7 fm's Accordion Noir radio show.
Bonus!
We got to play with Raghu at the show, on his anthemic "theme song", and here's proof:

2011-04-05: Planks at CabaRadio 2nd anniversary broadcast
You can hear us here! Our first song, the Volga Boatmen birthday song, begins at 8:41 (CabaRadio enjoys great production values, and it enjoys them at its leisure), which we follow up with Psycho Killer at 9:40, our Kishka Anthem at 13:34, and Kiddie Closer again for kicks at 17:56.

2011-01-26: Creaking Planks radio takeover on CaBaRadio and Accordion Noir!
In promotion of our fabulous 6-year-anniversary show next Monday night, we've hit the airwaves! Last night we joined Teddy Smooth and E-Roc at CaBaRadio again over at CiTR in the UBC student union building, where we played tunes and made strange innuendo late into the night. Always good times. We hadn't confirmed the engagement with enough advance warning to let potential listeners know, but ... in all honesty, how many of you would be tuned in to campus radio after midnight? (More than I expect, hopefully!)
We lifted a page from our friend Ryan Fletcher at CJSF's Melodies in Mind and as guest troubadors took it upon ourselves to musically interpret some public service announcements the show wanted its listeners to know about, including a very special rendition of a song from the Rocky Horror Picture Show, screening this weekend... well, you'll get all the info in the recording. Also excitingly present, though you have to wait through the whole recording -- a world exclusive sneak peek of some recent studio work we've been doing on Phaulonious J Knucklebones' original songs, thanks to new friends made at the Orange Party! Admittedly this recording isn't done yet, but it's more than half-baked ... and it's been a very long time since we were committed to any permanent media in any form. A better representation of us, to be sure!
We managed to mine the Plankian portions of the show from its podcast and serve it up to you here; in the meantime, it's not too late to catch the black wave of our promotional hype, as we'll be on the air tonight down in the downtown eastside studios of CFRO Co-Op Radio at Accordion Noir, whose audience we haven't joined since an Accordion Noir Festival promo appearance back in 2008. Excitingly, we're hoping to take on the challenge to do our own version of their lovely theme song -- and would encourage you to do the same!
In the meantime, here's a log for our truncated CaBaRadio recording:
- Creaking Planks - Dead Man's Pants (Al Mader) 3:39-5:54 (2m15)
- Creaking Planks Duo - announcements medley - LIVE! 6:56-10:37 (3m41)
- Creaking Planks Duo - The Girl In The Pink Canoe (Big Rude Jake) - LIVE! 16:14-19.25 (3m11)
- Creaking Planks Duo - Womanizer / Toxic medley (Britney Spears) - LIVE! 22.28-28.28 (6m00)
- Creaking Planks - Kishka Anthem (debut!) 32.06-34.57 (2m49)
We've also managed to skip the queue usually involved while waiting for the Accordion Noir folks to post their episodes online as a podcast. It's here, 12 hours later, and though we don't have a full track listing (edit: the AN folks do, up at their website, with creative song titling), here's all the places you can hear four mighty Planks playing their hearts out:
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Accordion Noir theme (Andy Fielding) - LIVE! 0:00-2:32 (2m32)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Insane in the Membrane (Cypress Hill) - LIVE! 11:07-14:30 (3m23)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Flatbush Waltz (Andy Statman) - LIVE! 15:03-17:14 (2m13)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Tanz Tanz Yidelehk - LIVE! 23:47-27:33 (3m46)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Sometimes All Of The People Aren't Here All Of The Time - LIVE! 29:39-32:49 (3m10)
- Creaking Planks - Kishka Anthem (studio mix) 33:04-35:53 (2m49)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Vanha Jatsi Station ID - LIVE! 42:52-43:38 (0m46)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - Psycho Killer (Talking Heads) - LIVE! 44:00-47:41 (3m41)
- Creaking Planks Quartet - the Song of the Count / Bones Bones Bones (Sesame Street) - LIVE! 50:20-56:58 (6m38)
Also eminently worth mentioning -- us welching on our word! We were going to take all January off to develop new material for our anniversary show, but we did join the cool cats at Bandidas again for their own anniversary back on Jan 6th. We didn't promote it since it was their own private party of sorts, but we played the heck out of lots of great songs there. Many happy returns and hope to see you again there next January, Bandidas!

2011-01-31: Creaking Planks 6th anniversary
Sunday January 30th, 2005, in the auditorium at the Western Front, a room which has seen so many deliberately stranger things, an accordionist with a performance poetry troupe met an outsider acoustic noise duo with slightly more underground musical sensibilities than the Shaggs had, and knew that their two great tastes must go great together. Enter: the Creaking Planks. Six years later, we skip lightly past the endless living rooms, back yards, and festivals, Vancouver's introduction to the ZombieWalk, a pirate flashmob, two stage musicals, gigs down the US Pacific seaboard (studded with the abandoned hulks of derelict tour vehicles), and memorable mixed bills -- following '50s squeezebox sex symbol Dick Contino at the 20th annual Cotati Accordion Festival, and opening in turn for free software guru Richard Stallman... our two biggest gigs!
Now we actually know how to play our instruments, and our musical sensibilities have matured from "Can we play this?" to "Should we play this?" In honour of our six years we're putting to bed many of the songs we've kept close this whole time, and celebrating onetime contributors whose paths led them through the rotating roster of Planks before settling for other, less strange projects. We may not match our record of 11 Planks on-stage simultaneously, but we should be able to at least cumulatively meet that high-water mark over the course of the night. Joining us will be musical guiding lights Petunia the yodeling cowboy and Al Mader, the Minimalist Jug Band, whose "I'm a Lousy Lay" were the magic words that got us together in the first place.
It's also a retirement for Dieter Friesen's tenure booking his Deet Street nights at the Railway Club, a long association between him and us dating back to our first appearance there in April '06 sharing a bill with his band Rick Danko's Ghost under the auspices of Tamara Nile. In short, we have numerous reasons to be celebrating this night, of things changing more the more they stay the same.
Update! Allan reviewed it, in a roundabout fashion, and an American friend came up from Bellingham to enjoy some great music and take a bunch of pictures capturing the night's wild and woolly energy!

2010-05-31: Planks get good press, play Deet Street birthday party
| Attendees of early Creaking Planks shows—say, at the first Vancouver Zombiewalk after-party, where Rowan "Blackbox Squeezebeard" Lipkovits (accordion) and Lee Shoal (ukulele, kazoo) did somewhat halting covers of songs like the Kingston Trio’s "Zombie Jamboree" — could be forgiven for thinking the band a joke. A funny joke, and certainly an in-joke, but not a group you might turn to for the pleasures of polished musicianship, even of the jug-band variety. Well, here’s a surprise: as if to illustrate the truth of the saying that a fool who persists in his folly shall become wise, the Planks have benefited from playing innumerable shows locally and throughout the Pacific Northwest. While still richly swathed in irony, the traditionals on this CD (European and/or Yiddish folkie fare like "Tanz Tanz Yidelekh" and "Moscow Nights" and the absurdly deadpan covers—including a new recording of Lipkovits's delightful arrangement of the Minimalist Jug Band's "Dead Man's Pants"—are, in fact, quite beautifully conceived and credibly played. |
That night, at the gobsmacking Cabaret of Wonders!, we sold our last two remaining copies of the suddenly-in-demand disc. Perhaps a reprinting will be in order -- though we may have seen the last of the limited-edition stylish metal containers.
But enough resting on our laurels! Moving on from past glories, an increasingly rump Planks (blasted summer travels -- and I'm up next!) will be wigglin' and groovin' tonight at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir Street) from 9:15 on with our Deet Street friends, including the slam poetry of Lara, the "folk/rock/blues stylings of the Dennis Pimm Jamtacular Experience", and our favorite -- a puppet show entitled "The Tragic Tale of Pierrot" presented by Carnival Sized Cinnamon Hearts. $7/5 for Railway members!
Bonus! A doodle from Chloe Ziner of the Mind of a Snail puppet troupe!
